5 Iconic Theatres in London’s Famous West End
If you’re a theatre fan, London’s West End is an incredible destination. It has hosted countless legendary performances in its historic venues since the 17th century. There are dozens of theatres to choose from – but here’s a quick rundown of five of the most famous.
Theatre Royal Drury Lane
The oldest theatre in the West End has been in operation since 1663, with shows running the gamut from Shakespearean plays to modern musicals. A recent renovation has restored its historic beauty while improving the theatre-going experience.Fun fact: The theatre is famously haunted by “The Man in Grey,” a ghostly figure in 18th-century clothing. Legend has it that whenever he appears, the show that’s playing will be a hit!
The London Palladium
The London Palladium is famous for its variety of performances, musicals, and legendary stars. Since it opened in 1910, some of the biggest names in entertainment have performed there, including Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and The Beatles.Fun fact: The Palladium played a key role in The Beatles' rise to fame: their 1963 performance helped spark Beatlemania.
The Palace Theatre
With its stunning red-brick facade and grand Victorian design, it’s one of the West End’s most visually striking venues. Originally built for opera in 1891, it became a hub for musical theatre, with legendary productions like Les Misérables. Today, it’s the home of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.Fun fact: The Palace Theatre was the original home of Jesus Christ Superstar, which ran for eight years and helped cement Andrew Lloyd Webber’s status as a musical theatre legend.
The Apollo Victoria Theatre
Opened in 1930 as a cinema, this lovely Art Deco theatre is currently the home of Wicked, which has played there since 2006.Fun fact: Wicked has been seen by over 10 million people in London alone, making it one of the West End’s most successful shows.
The Dominion Theatre
Built in 1929, this theatre has seen some of the West End’s biggest productions, with a massive stage and grand design that make it ideal for large-scale musicals. Currently, it’s home to The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical.
Fun fact: In 1958, the Dominion Theatre hosted the European premiere of South Pacific, attended by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

5 Reasons to Discover Dubrovnik
Have you been thinking about a trip to Croatia? Dubrovnik is the perfect place to start your adventure! The beautiful, historic coastal city – known as the Pearl of the Adriatic – is definitely worth a visit. Here’s why:
- An incredible Old Town: Walking the cobblestone streets of Dubrovnik feels like stepping back in time. The city's historic quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an enchanting maze of narrow, picturesque streets and well-preserved medieval architecture. Check out the Rector’s Palace, a beautiful example of Gothic-Renaissance architecture that offers a glimpse into the power and elegance of Dubrovnik’s historic republic. Stroll the iconic Stradun, a limestone-paved street with local shops, cafes, and beautiful views of the surrounding city walls.
- The city walls: Climb Dubrovnik’s ancient city walls for breathtaking views of Old Town’s iconic terracotta rooftops, the shimmering waters of the Adriatic, and the islands that dot the Dalmatian Coast. These ancient fortifications, which stretch for nearly two kilometres, include massive stone towers, historic battlements, charming hidden corners – and a sweeping perspective of the city’s rich history and beauty.
- Beautiful beaches: Dubrovnik isn’t just famous for its history – the beaches and crystal clean waters along its storied coastline are truly stunning, with everything from secluded coves to lively beach clubs. The most popular is Banje Beach – located near the Old Town, it has great views of the city walls and Lokrum Island. Sveti Jakov Beach is a little more secluded: hidden below a cliff, its turquoise waters offer a lovely, tranquil escape.
- Game of Thrones filming locations: Dubrovnik served as a primary filming location for the popular TV series Game of Thrones. Fans of the show will instantly recognize imposing Fort Lovrijenac as the Red Keep, where Cersei Lannister plotted her many schemes, and the Jesuit Staircase, forever tied to her infamous walk of shame. Strolling through the city's ancient streets, it’s easy to feel like you’ve stepped into the capital of Westeros.
- Amazing food: The local cuisine is diverse and delicious, blending Mediterranean and Balkan influences. Get your fill of freshly caught seafood like grilled octopus, crni rižot (black risotto), and scampi buzara, all prepared with top-quality olive oil and plenty of flavourful herbs and garlic. You can also enjoy local cheeses, grilled meats, and delicious wines – just take your pick of any of the charming restaurants and cafes throughout the city.

Exploring Maya History in Guatemala
Tikal National Park, located in northern Guatemala, is one of Central America’s most significant archaeological and ecological sites. Spanning over 570 square kilometers, the park is home to the ancient Maya city of Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tikal’s towering pyramids, intricate carvings, and vast plazas are a testament to the architectural and cultural achievements of this ancient civilization. The remarkable Temple of the Great Jaguar, built over a thousand years ago, is one of the park’s most photographed structures in the park and an impressive demonstration of their engineering prowess.
Hidden for centuries beneath jungle growth, Tikal's ruins were rediscovered in the 19th century. Today they have been partially excavated and restored, and visitors can explore its towering temples and ancient causeways to get a glimpse into the daily life of the Maya people. They can also see evidence of their deep understanding of astronomy: many of the structures align with the movements of the sun, moon, and stars, which played an important role in their religious and agricultural practices and helped them create advanced calendar systems.
In addition to its architectural wonders, Tikal National Park is also a biodiversity hotspot, with a vast array of wildlife and lush tropical vegetation. The dense rainforests are teeming with howler monkeys, vibrant toucans and scarlet macaws, jaguars, ocelots, tapirs, and hundreds of other species. The park is part of the expansive Maya Biosphere Reserve, a conservation area that safeguards these delicate habitats, ensuring they continue to thrive.
You can visit Tikal National Park on our tour to Guatemala and Belize in November. The 15-day trip is a wonderful chance to dive into the history, culture and beauty of two incredible countries, visiting UNESCO Heritage Sites, discovering fascinating towns and villages, and swimming in crystal-clear waters.
